Baseboard Calculator

A 12 by 10 foot room, one 3 foot door, and 10 percent waste orders 45.10 feet of baseboard (3 pieces at 16 feet) and 48.40 feet of crown (5 pieces at 12 feet).

Last updated . Door width starts at three feet. Cope starts at zero. Waste starts at 10 percent.

A baseboard calculator for the floor trim and the crown. Perimeter is twice the length plus the width. Doors shorten only the floor trim. A cope or miter allowance is added only when you type one.

Baseboard and crown

Four inside corners is the rectangle starter. The cope box starts at zero, so nothing extra is hidden in the corners. Type an allowance there, or leave it at zero and keep the extra inside the waste percent. Doors come off the base run only. Crown stays on the ceiling line.

Perimeter, doors, and the corner allowance

A rectangle’s perimeter is 2 × (length + width). The starter room is 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 feet. Each door removes its width from the floor trim. One 3 foot door leaves 41 feet of baseboard before waste. Crown does not stop for that door, so its net stays 44 feet until you add a corner allowance.

Inside corners are where a cope or an outside miter eats a little extra stick. The corner count opens at 4, which is a rectangle, and the allowance opens at 0. Nothing is buried in the math. If you type 2 inches at each of four corners, the form adds 8 inches, which is 0.67 feet, to both runs. You can also leave the allowance at zero and let the waste percent carry the offcuts.

Order multiplies the net by 1 plus the waste percent divided by 100. At 10 percent the base order is 41 × 1.10 = 45.10 feet, and the crown order is 44 × 1.10 = 48.40 feet. Pieces are that order divided by the stock length you type, rounded up. 45.10 ÷ 16 is 2.82, which is 3 sticks. 48.40 ÷ 12 is 4.03, which is 5 sticks. The 16 foot and 12 foot lengths are examples, not a mill’s catalog.

Baseboard and crown questions

How much baseboard and crown does a 12 by 10 room need?

Leave length 12 ft, width 10 ft, one door at 3 ft, four corners, cope at 0, waste at 10, base stock at 16 ft, and crown stock at 12 ft. Perimeter reads 44.00 ft · 13.41 m. Cope added reads 0.00 ft · 0.00 m. Baseboard net reads 41.00 ft · 12.50 m. Baseboard to order reads 45.10 ft · 13.75 m. Baseboard pieces reads 3. Crown net reads 44.00 ft · 13.41 m. Crown to order reads 48.40 ft · 14.75 m. Crown pieces reads 5.

What changes if each corner gets 2 inches for a cope?

Leave the 12 by 10 room, the one 3 ft door, four corners, and 10 percent waste. Set the cope length to 2 in. Cope added reads 0.67 ft · 0.20 m. Baseboard net reads 41.67 ft · 12.70 m. Baseboard to order reads 45.83 ft · 13.97 m. Baseboard pieces stays 3. Crown net reads 44.67 ft · 13.61 m. Crown to order reads 49.13 ft · 14.98 m. Crown pieces stays 5. That 2 inches is something you type. The form does not invent it.

Why does the door come off the base and not the crown?

The door opening interrupts the floor line. The ceiling line still runs across the head of that opening, so crown net keeps the full perimeter and only gains the cope length. With the starter numbers, baseboard net is 44 − 3 = 41 feet before waste, and crown net stays 44 feet.

What if the waste box is cleared?

Clear the waste percent and leave the 12 by 10 room, the door, and the stock lengths. Perimeter, cope added, and both net lines stay. Baseboard to order reads Enter a waste percent. Crown to order reads Enter a waste percent. Both piece lines read —.

What if a stock length is cleared?

Clear the baseboard stock length and leave waste at 10. Baseboard to order still reads 45.10 ft · 13.75 m. Baseboard pieces reads Enter a stock length. Crown pieces still reads 5 while its stock length stays 12 ft.

What does zero waste do to the piece count?

Set waste to 0 and leave the other starter numbers. Baseboard to order reads 41.00 ft · 12.50 m and baseboard pieces still reads 3, because 41 ÷ 16 rounds up. Crown to order reads 44.00 ft · 13.41 m and crown pieces reads 4, because 44 ÷ 12 rounds up from 3.67.

What if the room has two doors?

Set the door count to 2 and leave each door at 3 ft, waste at 10, and cope at 0. Baseboard net reads 38.00 ft · 11.58 m. Baseboard to order reads 41.80 ft · 12.74 m. Baseboard pieces reads 3. Crown net and crown to order stay 44.00 ft · 13.41 m and 48.40 ft · 14.75 m.
