Tile Calculator

A 10 by 10 foot floor of 12 by 12 inch tile with a 1/8 inch joint is 97.95 tiles. Ten percent waste orders 108 tiles, and 11 boxes at 10 square feet per box.

Last updated . Length and width start in feet. Tile and joint start in inches. Switch any length to meters, yards, millimeters, or centimeters. Straight starts at 10 percent and diagonal at 15 percent. Box coverage starts at 10 ft², a planning figure. No price.

Enter the floor, the tile, and the grout joint. Tiles use the face plus the joint. Boxes use the floor area after waste, divided by the square feet on the carton.

How the tiles are counted

Tiles = area ÷ (tile length + joint) ÷ (tile width + joint). The joint is added once to each side, so the corner is not counted twice. A 12 in tile with a 0.125 in joint on a 10 by 10 foot floor is 97.95 tiles, about 0.98 per square foot. Set the joint to 0 and the same floor is 100.00 tiles.

The order is that count times 1 plus the waste percent, rounded up. Ten percent of 97.95 is an order of 108. Boxes ignore the piece count. They divide the floor area after waste by the square feet per box you type. 100.00 × 1.10 = 110.00 ft², and 110.00 ÷ 10 = 11 boxes. The 10 ft² start is a planning coverage so the division can be checked. Type the number on the carton. Why straight, diagonal, herringbone, and a large tile do not share one percent is the tile waste guide.

Worked example

Leave every field as it opens: floor 10 ft by 10 ft, tile 12 in by 12 in, joint 0.125 in, layout Straight, waste 10 percent, box coverage 10 ft². Area reads 100.00 ft² · 9.29 m². Tiles read 97.95. Order with waste reads 108. With waste reads 110.00 ft². Boxes read 11.

The same 10 by 10 floor at the other layouts and tile sizes. Boxes stay on the floor area, so a 6 in tile does not change the carton count.

Frequently asked questions

How many 12 by 12 tiles for a 10 by 10 floor?

Leave the floor at 10 ft by 10 ft, the tile at 12 in by 12 in, the joint at 0.125 in, and the waste at 10 percent. Area reads 100.00 ft² · 9.29 m². Tiles read 97.95. Order with waste reads 108. With waste reads 110.00 ft². Boxes read 11 at 10 ft² per box.

Why is the tile count under 100?

Each tile is counted with its grout joint. A 12 in tile plus a 0.125 in joint is larger than the tile face, so 100 square feet holds 97.95 tiles, about 0.98 per square foot. Set the joint to 0 and the count is 100.00 tiles. At 10 percent the order is then 110, and the boxes stay 11.

How many tiles for a diagonal layout?

Choose Diagonal, 15 percent. The waste field becomes 15. Tiles stay 97.95. Order with waste reads 113. With waste reads 115.00 ft². Boxes read 12. Straight and diagonal are planning allowances. Type another percent if the carton or the installer names one.

How many 6 by 6 tiles is that?

Set the tile to 6 in by 6 in and leave the joint at 0.125 in and the waste at 10 percent. Tiles read 383.84. Order with waste reads 423. Boxes stay 11. Boxes follow the floor area after waste divided by the square feet on the carton, not the piece count. A smaller tile does not change a 10 ft² box.

How are the boxes counted?

With waste is the floor area times 1 plus the waste percent: 100.00 × 1.10 = 110.00 ft². Boxes divide that by the coverage you type and round up. At 10 ft² per box, 110.00 ÷ 10 = 11.00, so the order is 11 boxes. The 10 ft² start is a planning figure. Type the coverage printed on the box.

Does the order include cuts at the walls?

The tile line is the full modules that fit the area: area ÷ (tile length + joint) ÷ (tile width + joint). The order rounds that count up after the waste percent. It does not draw a layout or count partial tiles at the edges. The waste percent is the allowance for those cuts.

Is this the grout or the thinset?

No. This page counts tiles and boxes. The grout in the joints is the grout calculator. The mortar under the tile is the thinset calculator. Several rooms added together, without a tile size, is the flooring calculator.
