1 Inch Gravel Calculator

A 10 ft by 10 ft area at 2 inches is 0.62 cubic yards and 0.83 short tons at 1,600 kg/m³.

Last updated . 1,600 kg/m³ is Caterpillar’s loose crushed-stone figure and this site’s clean-stone default. One yard is 1.35 short tons, 2696.89 lb, and 1.22 tonnes. “1 inch gravel” here means stone near ASTM D448 No. 5, not ASTM No. 1.

If the ticket says #57, use the #57 calculator. The large 2-1/2 to 1-1/2 inch stone is the No. 2 calculator.

What size is it?

ASTM No. 1 is 3-1/2 to 1-1/2 inches. A search for 1 inch gravel is looking for a smaller stone. The closest numbered size is ASTM D448 No. 5, nominal 1 to 1/2 inch. #57 still passes a 1 inch sieve, but more of it falls through 1/2 inch, and the #57 page already covers that product. This page does not replace it.

No. 5 sieve bounds used here: 100 percent passing 1-1/2 inch, 90–100 percent passing 1 inch, 20–55 percent passing 3/4 inch, 0–10 percent passing 1/2 inch, 0–5 percent passing 3/8 inch. FHWA-HRT-15-034 Table 4 lists No. 57 as 95–100 percent passing 1 inch and 25–60 percent passing 1/2 inch.

Weight per cubic yard

One cubic yard at 1,600 kg/m³ is 1.35 short tons, 2696.89 lb, and 1.22 tonnes. One short ton is 0.74 cubic yards. That matches #57, clean 3/4, and the sand default on this site. The tons converter uses the same 1,600 for the 1 inch row.

Coverage

One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch and 162 square feet at 2 inches. A 10 by 10 foot area is 100 square feet, so 2 inches is 100 ÷ 162 = 0.62 cubic yards. The foot line of that layer is 16.67.

Worked example

Leave length and width at 10 ft, depth at 2 in, and density at 1600. Finished cubic yards read 0.62. Order cubic yards read 0.62. Order short tons read 0.83. Order tonnes read 0.76. The formula line shows 16.67 ft³, 0.47 m³, allowance 0.00 percent, and 0.83 short tons.

Frequently asked questions

What size is 1 inch gravel?

A product sold as 1 inch gravel is commonly the stone that passes a 1 inch sieve and sits on a 1/2 inch sieve. That lines up with ASTM D448 Size No. 5, nominal 1 to 1/2 inch: 100 percent passing 1-1/2 inch, 90–100 percent passing 1 inch, 20–55 percent passing 3/4 inch, 0–10 percent passing 1/2 inch, and 0–5 percent passing 3/8 inch. It is not ASTM No. 1. No. 1 is 3-1/2 to 1-1/2 inch.

Is 1 inch gravel the same as #57?

They overlap and they are not the same spec. #57, AASHTO M 43 / ASTM D448, is published in FHWA-HRT-15-034 Table 4 as 95–100 percent passing 1 inch, 25–60 percent passing 1/2 inch, 0–10 percent passing the No. 4 sieve, and 0–5 percent passing the No. 8. No. 5 is the 1 to 1/2 inch size above. If the ticket says #57, use the #57 calculator. Both pages start at 1,600 kg/m³, so a yard weighs the same until you change the density.

How much does a yard of 1 inch gravel weigh?

The start is 1,600 kg/m³, Caterpillar’s loose crushed-stone figure. One cubic yard is 1.35 short tons, 2696.89 lb, and 1.22 tonnes. One short ton is 0.74 cubic yards. Caterpillar pairs 1,600 kg/m³ with 2,700 lb per yard. This site’s conversion prints 2696.89 lb. The 3.11 lb gap is that published pair versus 0.9144³ cubic meters per yard and 907.18474 kg per short ton.

How much 1 inch gravel for 10 by 10 feet at 2 inches?

The boxes open on that example. Finished and order volume are both 0.62 cubic yards, 16.67 cubic feet, and 0.47 cubic meters. At 1,600 kg/m³ the weight is 0.83 short tons and 0.76 tonnes. One cubic yard covers 162 square feet at 2 inches, and 100 ÷ 162 is 0.62 yards.

How deep should 1 inch gravel be?

Two inches is a decorative or path depth, which is the example. A driveway needs a thicker base of dense-graded stone such as 304 or 411, with the 1 inch rock only as a surface if you use it that way. This calculator is one rectangular layer. It does not add a compaction percent.

What about pea gravel and 3/4 inch stone?

Pea gravel is rounded and about 1/8 to 3/8 inch. Clean 3/4 inch stone is the next size down from a true 1 inch product, and that page also starts at 1,600 kg/m³. Use those calculators when the bag says pea or 3/4. Use No. 2 when the stone is 2-1/2 to 1-1/2 inch.

Can I switch the units?

Yes. Each side has feet, inches, yards, meters, and centimeters, and depth adds millimeters. A 3.05 m by 3.05 m area at 5.08 cm is the same 0.62 cubic yards and 0.83 short tons at 1,600 kg/m³.
