Gravel Tons to Yards Calculator

One cubic yard of #57 gravel at 1,600 kg/m³ is 1.35 short tons (2696.89 lb) and 1.22 tonnes. One short ton is 0.74 cubic yards.

Last updated . A short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg). A tonne is 1,000 kg. One cubic yard is 0.764555 m³. The menu uses each existing page’s default density.

Convert tons to cubic yards or cubic yards to tons. Type either box. The other two follow. For length × width × depth, use the cubic yard calculator. For a general unit switch, use the material conversion calculator.

How the conversion works

Short tons = cubic yards × density (kg/m³) × 0.764554857984 ÷ 907.18474. The first constant is one cubic yard in cubic meters (0.9144³). The second is one short ton in kilograms. At 1,600 kg/m³, one yard is 1223.29 kg, which is 1.35 short tons and 1.22 tonnes. Leave the yard box at 1 and #57 selected. Those are the four result lines.

The other direction divides instead of multiplying. One short ton at 1,600 kg/m³ is 0.74 cubic yards. Ten short tons is 7.42 cubic yards, 5.67 m³, and 9.07 tonnes. Type 10 into the short-ton box to see that. Typing does not round the box you are editing, so 10 stays 10 while the yard box updates.

Density used for each material

These are the defaults already filled in on the linked calculators, not a new set of weights. Topsoil at 1,300 kg/m³ is 1.10 short tons per yard, the figure the topsoil page describes from a 2,200 lb planning weight. Class 5 at 2,400 kg/m³ is the heavy default that page states on purpose. Loose, wet, dry, and bank for one yard, without this whole table, is how much a yard of gravel weighs.

Worked example

Leave the material on #57 gravel and the cubic-yard box at 1. The short-ton box reads 1.35, the tonne box reads 1.22, and the pound line reads 2696.89. The formula line shows 1223.29 kg. Then type 10 in the short-ton box. The yard box reads 7.42 and the tonne box reads 9.07. Switch the material to 304 and type 1 in the yard box again. The ton line reads 1.62, which is the 304 page’s yard weight at 1,920 kg/m³.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

One cubic yard of #57, clean 3/4, or pea gravel at this site’s 1,600 kg/m³ default is 1.35 short tons, 2696.89 lb, and 1.22 tonnes. Crushed stone, crusher run, quarry dust, and limestone use 1,700 kg/m³ on their pages, which is 1.43 short tons per yard. 304 is 1.62 and class 5 is 2.02. Pick the material so the density matches that page.

How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?

One short ton of gravel at 1,600 kg/m³ is 0.74 cubic yards. The same ton of 304, at 1,920 kg/m³, is 0.62 cubic yards. Class 5 at 2,400 kg/m³ is 0.49 cubic yards. Type 1 in the short-ton box and leave the material on #57. The yard line reads 0.74.

How do I convert 10 tons of gravel to yards?

Ten short tons at 1,600 kg/m³ is 7.42 cubic yards and 5.67 cubic meters. That weight is 9.07 tonnes. A short ton is 2,000 lb and a tonne is 1,000 kg, so 10 short tons is not 10 tonnes. Type 10 in the short-ton box. The yard box reads 7.42.

What density does this calculator use?

Each menu row is the default already used on that material’s page. #57, clean 3/4, pea gravel, and the sand page use 1,600 kg/m³. 304 uses 1,920. Class 5, concrete, and asphalt use 2,400. Topsoil uses 1,300 kg/m³, which converts to 1.10 short tons per yard. Check “Enter density manually” when the quarry ticket prints a different number.

Is a yard of gravel the same weight as a yard of sand?

On this site the sand calculator and the #57 calculator both start at 1,600 kg/m³, so both convert 1 yard to 1.35 short tons. Pool filter sand starts at 1,680 kg/m³, which is 1.42 short tons per yard. Moisture changes the tons. It does not change the cubic yards.

How many cubic meters are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 0.76 cubic meters. One cubic meter is 1.31 cubic yards. The formula line under the result shows kilograms as well as tons. The material conversion calculator is the general tool for a weight you already know in kilograms or pounds.

Why is class 5 almost 2 tons per yard?

The class 5 page uses 2,400 kg/m³ on purpose. That is 2.02 short tons, 4045.33 lb, per cubic yard, near the heavy end of compacted class 5. Concrete and asphalt use the same default. Loose class 5 before compaction is lighter. Use the scale ticket when you have it.

Does this replace the #57 or driveway calculator?

No. This page converts a volume you already know into a weight, or a weight into a volume. The #57, 304, and driveway pages start from length, width, and depth. The cubic yard calculator does the shape math for a rectangle, circle, or triangle and does not pick a material.
